Around 4004 BBY, Jedi Master Thon brought the Vultan Oss Wilum to Ambria to continue his apprenticeship after the death of Wilum's original Master, the Neti Garnoo. Thon was a Tchuukthai Jedi Master whose non-Human body and unconventional teaching style made him unlike the humanoid Masters familiar in much later Jedi history.
A Vultan enters Jedi apprenticeship
Vulta had joined the Republic nearly ten thousand years earlier.
Oss Wilum's training shows one individual from that old member society entering a transgalactic religious institution.
An unconventional Jedi Master
Thon taught on the dark-side-scarred world Ambria.
His species and pedagogy challenged assumptions that Jedi authority had to look or behave in one standard way.
Anthropological assessment
The apprenticeship shows how Jedi identity crossed species and planetary boundaries.
It also demonstrates that a shared institutional role such as 'Master' could contain enormous biological and cultural variation.

A Jedi apprenticeship carried across species and worlds
Oss Wilum was a Vultan who came to Master Thon after an earlier stage of Jedi training under the Neti Jedi Garnoo. Garnoo's death interrupted his education, and Wilum needed another teacher before he could continue. Thon brought him to Ambria, an unusual training location influenced by dangerous dark-side history but also by the Jedi Master's sustained attempts to cultivate life in a damaged environment. The 4004 BBY appointment therefore belongs to a sequence of different mentors rather than a simple beginning in which Wilum had never encountered Jedi instruction.
Thon was a Tchuukthai whose appearance and methods differed from the more familiar humanoid Jedi image. His lessons challenged students to perceive the Force without reducing instruction to lightsaber skill. For Wilum, this was also a journey from a Vultan background and practical experience as a traveler into an interstellar religious vocation. Years later, Nomi Sunrider arrived on Ambria, finding Wilum already established as a student. The event should not be conflated with Nomi's own much later acceptance of Thon's guidance.
Apprenticeships can survive a teacher's death
Garnoo's death did not necessarily end Wilum's connection to the Jedi Order. Thon's decision preserved continuity through a change of mentor. Training was maintained by relationships between teachers as well as rules about institutional membership.
Jedi teachers did not share one physical form
Thon's Tchuukthai identity and Wilum's Vultan background show a transgalactic institution encompassing many species. Describing their instruction only through humanoid assumptions would obscure the culture of the Order in this period.
Was Thon Wilum's first Jedi teacher?
No. Legends character history identifies the Neti Jedi Garnoo as an earlier mentor. Thon accepted Wilum after Garnoo's death.

Master Thon and Oss Wilum demonstrate the Jedi's diverse forms
A Vultan becomes a Padawan
Legends reference chronology places Oss Wilum's entry into Master Thon's training around 4004 BBY. Oss is a Vultan Force-sensitive learner; Thon is a Tchuukthai Jedi Master living on Ambria. Their association makes a useful correction to histories that portray the Jedi exclusively through Human students and instructors. The appearance of a species is not evidence of a specific personality, ritual language or worldview shared by all its members. The main event is a relationship of teaching and apprenticeship across planetary backgrounds.
Ambria as an instructional environment
Thon trained students away from the Republic's main urban centers, creating a very different setting from a large temple on Coruscant. The landscape and the Jedi Master's unfamiliar form challenged conventional assumptions about what recognized Jedi authority should look like. This does not mean his students followed a separate, unrecognized order. In the published comic narrative Nomi later arrived on Ambria following Andur's death, and Marvel's retrospective explicitly mentions Oss Wilum as Thon's student.
Which evidence carries the date?
The original comics establish the characters, their relationships and the Ambria training setting. The particular 4004 BBY start date is an entry in later Legends reference chronology, not a date explicitly confirmed by Marvel's short publisher article. A careful record separates the dating tradition from the source for the depicted interaction. It also leaves open details that are not documented: the full duration of the apprenticeship, every lesson and the names of other students who might have lived near Thon's home.
Source judgment: Does Master Thon's non-Human appearance make his teachings an unofficial branch outside the Jedi Order?
Explanation: No. Thon is a Jedi Master despite belonging to a species unlike the Human Jedi usually shown. Species should not be mistaken for institutional affiliation.
Publication provenance: Marvel's original series retrospective. The publicly available summaries are evidence of the source corpus and selected scenes; dates from later companion or reference chronology must be independently checked against print. Continue related event →
c. 4004 BBY · Legends · assessed sources
Oss Wilum's apprenticeship had two Masters
Evidence
Oss Wilum began Jedi instruction with the Neti Master Garnoo. After Garnoo died, Thon continued his training on Ambria. The five years before Nomi's 3999 BBY arrival suggest a transfer around 4004 BBY.
Anthropological interpretation
This handover illustrates a Jedi educational network spanning species and worlds. It does not imply that Thon first discovered Wilum's Force sensitivity.
What remains uncertain
The transfer year is inferred from the five-year interval; the text does not preserve a witnessed exact acceptance date.
Historical judgment: Was Thon Oss Wilum's first teacher?
Explanation: No. Garnoo was the earlier Master, and Thon continued the training after Garnoo's death.
