After his defeat at Primus Goluud, Naga Sadow returned to Korriban with a battered fleet. There he found Ludo Kressh alive and commanding Sith forces that had remained behind. Kressh declared Sadow a threat to the Empire and attempted to prevent his return. Sadow responded by sending a damaged vessel into Kressh's flagship, killing his rival and ending the first battle above Korriban.

Ludo Kressh returns

Kressh had earlier faked his death after losing to Sadow.

While Sadow invaded the Republic, Kressh regained support among Sith who opposed the war.

A damaged ship becomes a weapon

Sadow was outnumbered and used one of his crippled vessels as a deliberate collision weapon.

The strike destroyed Kressh's flagship and killed him.

The Sith fight each other during a failed invasion

The battle exposed how divided the Sith Empire remained even while facing external defeat.

Internal rivalry consumed ships and leadership at the moment the Republic fleet was approaching.

Anthropological assessment

The first Korriban battle shows how factional politics can become strategically catastrophic during war.

Sith succession had never fully stabilized after Marka Ragnos's death, and the resulting civil violence weakened the Empire precisely when it needed unity.

Two Sith claimants fight during strategic defeat

  1. Ludo Kressh emerges from a previous feigned death and declares Sadow a threat to the Sith Empire.

  2. Sadow uses a damaged warship to strike Kressh's flagship. Kressh dies, but the internal fight destroys irreplaceable naval resources.

  3. Empress Teta's pursuing force arrives before Sadow can recover, turning the political victory into military vulnerability.

Should this be merged with the second Korriban battle?

No. The original comic presents the Kressh confrontation before Teta's arrival. Some later summaries compress their timing.

First Korriban: a succession dispute at the moment of defeat

The first confrontation over Korriban in the final phase of the Great Hyperspace War was a struggle between two Sith political factions. Ludo Kressh had resisted Naga Sadow's expansionist program, and Sadow returned from a disastrous external campaign to find that this rival still held military support. The ensuing battle was not an attack by Republic Jedi. Its central question was who could claim the authority of the old Sith state as that state was failing. By using a damaged vessel to strike Kressh's flagship, Sadow destroyed an internal rival but weakened the coherence of his own remaining defenses. The second battle at Korriban followed when Teta's pursuing forces arrived.

Evidence boundary: historical fact versus interpretive analysis

This is a Legends fictional-history dossier. Characters, encounters and broad outcomes follow Tales of the Jedi and licensed secondary chronology. Assessments of power, institutions, consent and political legitimacy are IDS interpretations. Page-specific casualty counts, direct speeches and scientifically exact mechanisms should not be inferred from a general reference summary or comic cover.

What the original history supports

This is a clash among Sith factions after the main Republic campaign, not the same as the Republic's postwar counterinvasion. Keeping separate event records is important because internal succession fighting and external occupation had different participants and political aims.

Interpretation and evidence limit

The comic provides a narrative of the rivalry; later reference books place individual battles within the year 5000 BBY. Minute-by-minute dates remain unverified.

A civil battle before the Republic fleet arrives

This is the first of two separate 5000 BBY battles near Korriban. Sadow returned from the failure at Primus Goluud only to encounter Ludo Kressh, who had survived an earlier confrontation by using a deception. Kressh claimed authority over the Sith Empire and challenged the defeated invader before the Republic's pursuit fleet arrived. The crisis was therefore a succession dispute inside the Sith Empire, not yet a direct Republic assault.

Sadow's deliberate collision of a damaged vessel with Kressh's flagship resolved the immediate contest by killing Kressh. This tactic shows the extent to which the rival Sith leaders were prepared to destroy their own military assets to settle a leadership claim. The victory did not restore the fleet Sadow had lost in the invasion; it left his ships still less prepared to resist the next enemy.

Later summaries sometimes compress the first and second Korriban battles into a single defeat. That loses the critical political distinction between a Sith factional war and Empress Teta's arrival from outside the Empire. The records should remain adjacent but separate, without manufacturing an interval measured in hours or days that the issue does not clearly specify.

Historical judgment: Did Empress Teta kill Ludo Kressh during the first Korriban confrontation?

Correction and evidence: No. Sadow killed his rival by ramming Kressh's flagship. Teta's fleet then arrived for the separate second Korriban battle.
