The Great Temple is built on Yavin 4

Current canon places construction of the Massassi Great Temple around 5000 BBY, preserving one of the saga's oldest physical structures into the age of the Rebel Alliance.

Current canon places the construction of Yavin 4's Great Temple at approximately 5000 BBY. The Massassi built the massive stepped structure, which survived for thousands of years and eventually became Base One, the Rebel Alliance headquarters from which the attack on the first Death Star was launched.

Massassi builders in current canon

Canon identifies Massassi as the builders of the Great Temple.

Ancient tradition also associates Massassi warriors and Sith history with Yavin 4.

Five millennia of reuse

The stone structure remained usable into the Galactic Civil War.

Rebel engineers converted ancient monumental space into hangars, command rooms, and briefing chambers.

A site with multiple historical layers

Different canon sources attach the temple to Massassi, Sith traditions, and the Ordu Aspectu.

The contradictions make the site resemble real archaeological monuments whose uses changed repeatedly over time.

Anthropological assessment

The Great Temple is a strong example of architectural reuse. Later occupants did not need to share the builders' religion or politics to find the structure useful.

Its long life also shows how material culture can bridge periods whose inhabitants have almost no direct social continuity.

Canon / ancient Yavin archaeology

One ancient monument, two distinct chronologies

In current Canon, the Massassi erected the Great Temple on Yavin 4 about five millennia before the Battle of Yavin. The monumental structure survived long after the society that built it vanished and was eventually repurposed as the Rebel Alliance's Base One. Film-era visitors could enter hangars, briefing rooms and ceremonial chambers without seeing what each had originally meant to the temple's builders. Archaeology and military necessity thus meet in the same stone building, while the surviving record provides far more detail about the Rebellion than about Massassi daily life.

The temple has also acquired conflicting ancient associations in Canon reference material. Some reports link the Massassi to Sith domination and Naga Sadow; the Doctor Aphra comics connect parts of the site's history with the much earlier Ordu Aspectu, a group whose chronology cannot be smoothly reduced to a single straightforward construction date. That tension is worth reporting rather than solving with an invented architectural phase. Legends tells a different story: the familiar Great Temple was constructed by the Massassi under Exar Kun's orders around 3997–3996 BBY. These are alternate continuities, not two sets of dates for one undisputed history.

Reusing a site does not preserve its original meaning

The Alliance selected ancient infrastructure because its scale, durable stonework and remote location could accommodate command operations. Its new uses reflected immediate military needs. The original Massassi might have understood particular spaces through ritual or political relationships that later users could not reconstruct from surviving walls alone.

The builders must remain visible

Modern characters often describe the ruins by their later function as a rebel base or a Sith monument. Canon nevertheless identifies the Massassi as builders. A historically careful account gives them a place in the narrative without assuming archaeologists know the details of their language, rituals or social structure.

Was the Great Temple built by Exar Kun's followers in Canon around 3997 BBY?

That 3997–3996 BBY construction is the Legends account. Canon references place Massassi construction around 5000 BBY, with additional ancient-source ambiguities.
