Around 15,000 BBY, the Indecta Era ended and the Kymoodon Era began. Later Legends reference works describe this new period as a second major boom in galactic expansion, comparable in broad terms to the earlier Great Manifest Period. Hyperspace travel became more commonplace, starship manufacturers multiplied, Republic exploration expanded again, and worlds beyond the older frontier entered denser networks of trade and settlement. The transition did not happen in a single ceremony or on one precisely preserved day. It is a historical periodization imposed on a cluster of long-running changes.
The Indecta Era ends
The preceding Indecta Era had begun in 17,018 BBY alongside the First Alsakan Conflict.
Its two thousand years were heavily shaped by repeated conflict between Coruscant and Alsakan, interrupted expansion, route warfare, and political reform.
By 15,400 BBY, the Second Alsakan Conflict had ended in a draw, leaving the Republic several centuries without an active Alsakan war.
A new phase rather than a clean break
Nothing in the source suggests that people woke up one morning and declared themselves inhabitants of the Kymoodon Era.
Historical eras are tools used by later historians to organize long spans of change.
The 15,000 BBY boundary is therefore best understood as a conventional marker for a shift in patterns rather than a single dramatic transition.
A second expansion boom
The Kymoodon Era is described as a second major expansionary period comparable to the Great Manifest Period.
Republic settlement and exploration accelerated into regions that earlier generations had reached only unevenly.
New worlds became connected to older Core and Inner Rim networks through travel, commerce, migration, and diplomacy.
Echoes of the Great Manifest Period
The Great Manifest Period had begun around 20,000 BBY and pushed large-scale settlement beyond the earlier Republic heartland.
That expansion had eventually contributed to the rival colonial networks that helped produce the Alsakan conflicts.
The Kymoodon expansion boom therefore began in a galaxy that already knew expansion could generate both prosperity and political rivalry.
Hyperspace becomes more commonplace
Later descriptions of the Kymoodon Era emphasize the increasing normality of hyperspace travel.
Interstellar movement was no longer the specialized undertaking it had been in the earliest Republic centuries.
Improved navigation, established routes, commercial experience, and a growing shipbuilding sector made movement between worlds more routine.
The rise of major starship manufacturers
The Kymoodon Era was later remembered as the founding period for several important starship manufacturers.
That association reflects the growth of a mature interstellar economy in which ship construction could support large, specialized commercial firms.
Starships were becoming ordinary infrastructure for civilization rather than rare instruments of exploration.
Industry follows mobility
More travel creates more demand for ships, replacement parts, fuel systems, navigation equipment, repair yards, and trained crews.
That demand supports new industries and new labor markets.
The Kymoodon expansion boom was therefore an economic transformation as well as a geographic one.
Routes become denser networks
The Republic already possessed ancient routes such as the Perlemian Trade Route and Corellian Run.
During the Kymoodon Era, existing corridors increasingly connected to secondary routes and new settlement zones.
A galaxy once organized around a few famous arteries became a denser network.
The frontier moves outward
As hyperspace travel became easier, the practical frontier of Republic settlement moved farther from the Core.
Regions previously described as Wild Space could become destinations for colonists, traders, missionaries, surveyors, and corporate expeditions.
The word “frontier,” however, reflected Republic geography rather than emptiness.
Expansion did not mean empty space
Many worlds beyond Republic control already had inhabitants, political systems, trade networks, and histories.
Republic expansion therefore meant contact with existing societies as often as settlement of uninhabited worlds.
The difference between exploration and intrusion depended heavily on perspective.
The Duinuogwuin lesson was recent
Only five centuries earlier, Republic scouts had triggered the Duinuogwuin Contention through a disastrous first contact.
That crisis had ended through diplomacy and the founding of the University of Coruscant.
The Kymoodon expansion boom therefore unfolded after a vivid demonstration of how dangerous poor first-contact practice could be.
The Republic Navy returns
Around the same c. 15,000 BBY transition, the Galactic Senate answered calls for the reestablishment of a centralized Republic Navy.
The old navy had largely disappeared after the Tionese War thousands of years earlier.
Its restoration signaled that renewed expansion and growing interstellar complexity required stronger collective security institutions.
Do not collapse the 15,000 BBY events together
The restoration of the Navy, Hutt Cataclysms, Anomid accession, Aqualish conflict, and era transition are all conventionally placed around 15,000 BBY.
The sources do not provide a month-by-month sequence establishing which happened first.
IDS therefore treats them as concurrent approximate events and gives each major development its own page.
The Anomids join the Republic
Around this same period, the Anomids of Yablari encountered Duros colonists and entered the Galactic Republic.
Their accession exemplifies the expanding political reach of the Republic at the beginning of the Kymoodon Era.
Expansion could occur through diplomacy and membership rather than conquest.
The Hutt Cataclysms end
Elsewhere, Hutt Space emerged from a devastating period of civil war traditionally called the Hutt Cataclysms.
Varl and other Hutt worlds were left devastated, and the survivors relocated their political center to Evocar, later transformed into Nal Hutta.
The Hutt reorganization would profoundly affect the Republic's expanding frontier in later centuries.
A different response to civil war
Hutt society responded to catastrophic clan conflict by developing institutions and philosophies intended to channel rivalry away from open territorial warfare.
The kajidic system emphasized competition through wealth, influence, and exploitation rather than constant clan war.
That political adaptation would help define Hutt power for millennia.
Conflict on Ando
Around 15,000 BBY, the Aquala, Quara, and Ualaq populations of Ando fought a devastating civil war.
The arrival of an offworld exploratory vessel changed the conflict by providing a common external target.
The Aqualish united, killed the explorers, seized the vessel, and learned to reproduce its technology.
First contact could produce incorporation—or violence
The Anomid and Aqualish stories sit beside each other in the same approximate period.
One contact helped bring a society into the Republic. Another escalated local conflict into hostility toward outsiders.
The expansion boom therefore cannot be reduced to a single narrative of peaceful progress.
The distant Cremlevian War also ends
Legends chronology also places the end of the Yuuzhan Vong's ancient Cremlevian War around 15,000 BBY in another galaxy.
That event is chronologically concurrent but geographically disconnected from Republic history at this stage.
IDS treats it as a separate deep-history thread rather than folding it into Republic causation.
What does “Kymoodon” mean?
The published reference works use the name Kymoodon Era but do not provide a securely documented etymology explaining who or what “Kymoodon” was.
IDS therefore does not invent a ruler, species, place, or philosophy behind the name.
The label should be treated as a historical period name whose origin is not preserved in the available summary tradition.
More than three thousand years
The Kymoodon Era lasted from approximately 15,000 BBY to 11,987 BBY.
That span covered more than three thousand years—longer than many entire civilizations in other settings.
It therefore contained multiple distinct political phases rather than one unchanging condition.
The Alsakan rivalry returns again
Peace with Alsakan would not last throughout the era.
The Third Alsakan Conflict began around 14,500 BBY, followed by a fourth and fifth conflict in later centuries.
The expansion boom and the Coruscant–Alsakan rivalry therefore coexisted rather than replacing one another.
The Herglic Trade Empire
Later in the Kymoodon Era, the Herglic Trade Empire joined the Galactic Republic.
That accession helped accelerate development around the Hidakai Pool and connected another major commercial civilization to Republic institutions.
The event illustrates the era's long-term pattern of expanding political and economic integration.
Expansion into Wild Space
In the later centuries of the era, Republic colonists pushed farther into Wild Space between Republic territory and Hutt Space.
This brought settlers into increasingly direct conflict with Hutt interests.
The Hutts sponsored raids against frontier colonies, often seeking captives for slavery.
Expansion creates new border violence
The same expansion that created trade and settlement also exposed colonists to raiding and enslavement.
Worlds such as Lexrul, Drogheda, Hathrox, Imram, and Parcovey Minor later appeared in accounts of Hutt attacks.
The Kymoodon Era's prosperity therefore had a violent frontier edge.
From Farm-Wife to Warrior
A later source preserves the title From Farm-Wife to Warrior, described as a contemporary account of slavery and frontier violence during the era.
Its survival is important because it points toward experiences normally absent from high-level political chronology.
The era was lived not only by chancellors, admirals, merchants, and noble houses but by settlers vulnerable to capture and displacement.
Mobility becomes power
The Kymoodon transformation demonstrates that easier travel is never merely technological.
Those who can move farther and more cheaply can establish colonies, reach markets, transport armies, migrate, raid, and build institutions across greater distances.
Improved mobility redistributes political power.
Manufacturers become political actors
As shipbuilding firms grew, they accumulated expertise and economic influence essential to the Republic's expansion.
A major manufacturer could affect which systems received vessels, what technologies spread, and how quickly regions became connected.
Industrial history therefore became part of political history.
Navy and commerce grow together
A more heavily traveled galaxy requires protection against piracy, raids, and regional conflict.
The same boom that expanded civilian traffic created pressure for stronger naval organization.
The restoration of the Republic Navy belongs to this wider transformation even though it deserves separate treatment.
Who decides where an era begins?
Period names simplify history by drawing lines across gradual processes.
The end of Indecta and beginning of Kymoodon is useful because patterns of expansion, travel, and industry become more prominent.
But the line at 15,000 BBY should not obscure continuities across it.
What did not suddenly change
Coruscant remained the Republic capital. Alsakan remained a powerful rival. The Jedi Order persisted. Ancient hyperlanes remained important. BoSS continued managing interstellar systems.
People living through the transition inherited institutions created thousands of years earlier.
The new era was built on old infrastructure.
A Legends framework
The formal Indecta–Kymoodon–Pius Dea sequence belongs to Legends reference history.
Current canon uses many of the same planets, species, routes, and institutions but has not adopted this full ancient Republic periodization.
The era labels should therefore not be presented as current-canon chronology.
Anthropological assessment
The beginning of the Kymoodon Era is best understood as a transformation in mobility. Easier hyperspace travel altered where people could live, whom they could trade with, how quickly governments could project authority, and which regions counted as “frontier.”
The expansion boom also illustrates that integration has multiple forms. The Anomids entered the Republic through contact and political accession. The Aqualish responded to offworld contact through violence. Hutt society was reorganizing after internal catastrophe. Expansion created connection without guaranteeing cooperation.
Finally, the era boundary itself is a reminder that historical periods are analytical tools. The galaxy did not change all at once in 15,000 BBY. Later historians grouped a range of technological, economic, and political changes under one name because together they marked a recognizable shift.
