Chopper is a support droid whose value comes from taking pressure off teammates and keeping a squad's key abilities available. Reckless Fling can grant buffs and shorten an ally's cooldown, while his specials let him Taunt or remove an enemy's buffs. More recent New Republic interactions broaden his options, but those additions have specific teammates and ability levels attached.

01 / BATTLE ROLE
Why this character earns a team slot
Chopper is a support droid whose value comes from taking pressure off teammates and keeping a squad's key abilities available. Reckless Fling can grant buffs and shorten an ally's cooldown, while his specials let him Taunt or remove an enemy's buffs. More recent New Republic interactions broaden his options, but those additions have specific teammates and ability levels attached.
Effective squad-building starts with an answer to a simple question: what problem does this unit solve that the other four cannot? A support can create a needed turn or keep a critical ally alive. A tank can divert attacks and buy time, while an attacker may provide a finishing sequence or damage modifier. Read the actual ability wording and the opponent's restrictions before assuming a familiar character always plays the same role. The current team format, relic levels, mods and active upgrade tiers all change results.
Read the exact playable version
Several Star Wars heroes have more than one playable incarnation in Galaxy of Heroes. A guide is only applicable when the full name and faction tags match the unit on your account. Each skill description below summarizes the fully upgraded mechanics, with specific notes where advanced upgrades change their function.
02 / FOUR ABILITIES TO RECOGNIZE
The kit, explained by use case
By Imperial Dark Sector
ABILITY INTELLIGENCE
Reckless Fling
The basic attack grants a random qualifying Droid, New Republic or Phoenix ally a useful buff. With its later upgrade, it may also reduce that ally's cooldown, creating value even when Chopper is not dealing significant damage.
ABILITY INTELLIGENCE
Cantankerous Clanker
Chopper Taunts for a turn and gains Evasion while that Taunt lasts. This can redirect incoming attacks, but Taunt is not a substitute for reading enemies who ignore it or use an undispellable effect.
ABILITY INTELLIGENCE
Metal Menace
Dispels target buffs. Depending on the number removed, the enemy team can lose Turn Meter while Chopper recovers Protection. The target being a Droid adds a separate Stun interaction.
ABILITY INTELLIGENCE
Maintenance Protocols
A restorative Unique that also offers assists under qualifying Droid, New Republic and Phoenix abilities. Added New Republic effects require the named teammates. Those conditions should never be assumed to operate in a generic Phoenix formation.
The importance of a skill is not the same as its rarity or upgrade cost. An Omega, Zeta or an additional unique effect may improve your team's overall performance more than the next level of a damaging basic attack. Conversely, a mode-limited improvement might accomplish nothing in the event you currently play. Confirm the latest ability level and its exact wording in the live game, then choose a specific result you want the upgrade to change.
03 / PLAY THE SQUAD
Five in-battle decisions
1. Open the battle by identifying the enemy whose buffs or next action will disrupt Hera's or Captain Rex's plan.
2. Consider whether Chopper should remove enemy buffs with Metal Menace before the attacker commits a Special.
3. Use Taunt only when diverting attacks protects a more important ally; check whether the opponent can ignore it.
4. Observe which ally receives the basic's cooldown help and whether the next Phoenix Special is now available.
5. If survival, not tempo, is failing, reassess Protection, health recovery and the selected Phoenix fifth slot.
This is a scenario-based decision sequence, not a fixed rotation. The correct order can change when an enemy starts with a bonus turn, a pre-battle Taunt, a Datacron modifier, or control immunity. If your initial attempt fails, record the first decisive event. Ask which ability failed, which enemy acted earlier than expected, and whether a missing upgrade or mod caused the difference. That gives you an actionable farming or retuning goal instead of an unhelpful statement that the team was too weak.
04 / TEAM BUILDING FILE
Five-character training formation
LEADERHera Syndulla
ALLY 1Captain Rex
ALLY 2Chopper
ALLY 3Kanan Jarrus
ALLY 4Sabine Wren
Hera leads and shares certain Phoenix Unique effects, Rex helps trigger support interactions, Kanan provides protection and Sabine applies offensive pressure. Chopper's Maintenance Protocols expressly excludes its assist effect from sharing with Phoenix allies. The New Republic clause is conditional and does not turn every Phoenix lineup into a New Republic squad.
This lineup is a learning example, not a verified current counter for every opponent. In Grand Arena 3v3 it cannot be copied intact, and mode-specific Omicrons or new unit releases may alter the ideal formation. Identify each member's unique contribution before investing further. If you replace a tank or control unit, determine which opposing ability can now disrupt your sequence. For a broader explanation, open the squad-building guide, or look up a documented opponent in the GAC Counter Desk.
05 / EQUIPMENT DESK
Mod starting point: Speed + Health
SetSpeed + Health
ArrowSpeed
TriangleProtection
CircleProtection
CrossProtection
Current Kyber samples favor Speed plus Health, a Speed arrow, and Protection in the triangle, circle and cross. That supports Chopper's need to act at the right time and recover his Protection, but a team facing heavy damage or special control may require an adjusted defensive balance.
Published mod popularity is not proof that an arrangement is mathematically best for a specific encounter. Inspect Speed secondaries, the other characters' turn order, the type of enemy debuff you must resist or apply, and whether a fragile unit needs more Protection. Remember that square and diamond mod slots have fixed primary categories. Spend slicing resources only once a candidate helps a named battle goal. The six-slot mod guide explains how these decisions work in general.
06 / AVOIDABLE ERRORS
Where players waste upgrades
Assuming all Maintenance Protocols effects are shared through Hera when the ability specifically excludes its assist.
Treating New Republic-only effects as active without the required leader and ally.
Using Taunt at a time when the enemy cannot hurt the unit you are trying to protect.
Equipping six mediocre mods solely to finish a set while ignoring needed Speed and Protection secondary stats.
Gear, relic materials and high-tier ability materials are much harder to replace than an ordinary battle attempt. Before buying an ability or raising the next relic level, state what the investment is supposed to accomplish. If it does not solve the problem in the mission, squad or guild mode you intend to complete, the resources may be better saved for another character or fleet prerequisite.
07 / QUICK ANSWERS
Questions worth checking
Which ability matters for Phoenix?
Maintenance Protocols, Metal Menace and his support specials all serve different purposes. Read the actual level of each ability on your account; do not expect a late upgrade on an unfinished character.
Is this the best team for every game mode?
No. A five-character example illustrates a coherent kit, but 3v3 and 5v5 Grand Arena, Territory Wars, guild raids and seasonal activities have different constraints. Recheck unit eligibility, enemy mechanics, and any Omicron requirement.
Where should I farm this character?
Open the current in-game acquisition panel or linked unit source. Farming nodes, shipment offers, accelerated drops, and event availability can change. Do not spend crystals because an old screenshot lists a particular offer.
