General Grievous

General Grievous is a lesson in reading a character's unusual damage scaling. His attacks scale with Max Health rather than ordinary Physical damage, so a typical attacker build may waste the stat investment that makes the squad function. He also interacts with Droid allies in ways that would be harmful or nonsensical on an unrelated team.

01 / CHARACTER INTELLIGENCE

Why General Grievous matters

General Grievous is a lesson in reading a character's unusual damage scaling. His attacks scale with Max Health rather than ordinary Physical damage, so a typical attacker build may waste the stat investment that makes the squad function. He also interacts with Droid allies in ways that would be harmful or nonsensical on an unrelated team.

A character's displayed Galactic Power is not enough to determine performance. Examine the fully upgraded text, the actual ability level on your account, allies who meet faction restrictions, and the battle mode. The same unit can have a different purpose in a starting team, a full Grand Arena defense, and a guild event. This guide covers the mechanical decisions you can understand before spending rare resources.

02 / CORE ABILITY MECHANICS

What the abilities actually do

READ THE TRIGGER

The kit's crucial interaction

Daunting Presence gives Separatist and Droid interactions around Target Lock and Turn Meter. Metalloid Monstrosity damages friendly Droids at the start of Grievous's turn, then increases his own Health and Potency and can Mark allied Droids as his Health falls. A later Unique upgrade rewards the defeat of a Droid or Separatist ally with a cooldown reset and bonus turn.

UPGRADE PRIORITY

Spend for a specific effect

Inspect Metalloid Monstrosity's Zeta when deciding whether the team's core mechanic is complete. Daunting Presence has another important ability upgrade. Because Grievous's attacks scale on Health, high-quality Health primaries and sets may outperform generic offense builds. Do not rush investments without reviewing the current upgrade tier text.

TEAM REQUIREMENTS

Why the tags matter

Do not assume narrative affiliations grant battle effects. Some leader and Unique abilities only recognize exact in-game faction tags. Check your teammates, their versions, ability upgrades and any mode-limited wording before treating an effect as active.

The descriptions summarize levelled abilities rather than reproducing the full ability text. The current unit page on SWGOH.GG ↗ includes the full upgrade ladder and changes between levels.

03 / BATTLE WALKTHROUGH

A five-step decision sequence

  1. Confirm the whole lineup actually provides the Droid or Separatist mechanics you are relying upon.
  2. Read how Target Lock will be applied and what damaging a target-locked enemy gives the team.
  3. Expect allied Droid Health costs when Grievous starts his turn. Understand the intended sequence rather than interpreting every lost Health point as a misplay.
  4. Use the tank and supporting Droids to keep the win condition operating until Grievous can attack decisively.
  5. Observe what happens after an allied Droid or Separatist is defeated; after the required upgrade, bonus turns and cooldown resets may change the order of play.
Use these as conditional decisions, not fixed animation instructions.

The actual first move depends on the opponent, turn order, immunity, ability level and event. If a condition above is not met, stop and reread the relevant kit before attempting the same sequence again.

04 / ILLUSTRATIVE TEAM CORE

Build around a purpose

01General GrievousLEADER / TEAM CORE
02B1 Battle DroidROLE TO VERIFY
03B2 Super Battle DroidROLE TO VERIFY
04IG-100 MagnaGuardROLE TO VERIFY
05DroidekaROLE TO VERIFY

B1 Battle Droid, B2 Super Battle Droid, IG-100 MagnaGuard and Droideka illustrate a classic Separatist Droid group. Their roles include support, control, damage and protection. More recent Separatist options may change the ideal five, but the known core makes the unique kit logic easier to study.

Before farming another teammate, check whether you own that exact playable variant, what it provides at your current gear and ability levels, and whether the squad unlocks content you want to pursue. When the team is incomplete, use the character finder and farming planner to document the missing roles.

05 / STARTING MOD CONFIGURATION

Mods: begin with Triple Health

SETTriple Health
ARROWHealth
TRIANGLECritical Damage
CIRCLEHealth
CROSSHealth

These are a source-checked snapshot of commonly equipped mods among top Kyber accounts, not an absolute optimal set for every roster. A different stat spread may be necessary for your opening turn order or a specific encounter. Square and diamond slots have fixed primary-stat categories, so secondary rolls and completion of a meaningful mod set can matter more than looking for an unavailable primary.

When comparing two candidate mods, check what the character needs to do first, which enemy effect can interrupt it, and whether the relevant primary or secondary stat makes that decision more reliable. Do not invest slicing materials until the mod will help a defined squad objective. See the complete mod slot guide for a beginner-friendly explanation.

06 / GAME MODE CONTEXT

Where this build changes

Grievous can serve as a Separatist attack or defense option in some modes, but newer counters and Datacrons can change its performance. He is also the commander of the Malevolence fleet, creating a secondary reason to understand his progression. His ship role does not imply all land-combat mods transfer equally to the fleet.

If your next activity is Grand Arena or Territory Wars, check Omicron activation and any Datacron restrictions. For raid, Coliseum or seasonal Era content, confirm the current roster eligibility before investing, because a mechanically strong character may not be eligible. For current GAC defender evidence use the Counter Desk; it links to the selected 5v5 or 3v3 match records rather than claiming every team can win.

07 / AVOIDABLE UPGRADES

Four mistakes to avoid

ERROR 01

Assuming

Following a generic Attacker Offense guide instead of reading the Max Health damage-scaling text.

ERROR 02

Spending

Replacing Droid teammates at random and losing crucial Unique interactions.

ERROR 03

Ignoring

Assuming the team should preserve every allied Droid's Health at all times despite the intended Grievous mechanic.

ERROR 04

Confusing

Treating a old one-shot counter against his squad as guaranteed in a new Grand Arena season.

A reliable way to prevent these mistakes is to write down the next event you want to complete, identify the exact requirement, and invest in the ability or piece of gear that removes the actual bottleneck. The visual rank and Galactic Power numbers alone are not enough to choose.

08 / OPEN A TACTICAL ANSWER

Quick questions

Why Triple Health sets?

His kit scales attacks with Max Health, making it unusually important for both offense and survival. Current high-level builds frequently emphasize Health sets.

Will losing an allied Droid always help?

No. The bonus turn and cooldown reset depend on ability upgrades and the exact death event, and losing a unit also removes its future contribution.

Where do I find current shards and exact upgrade costs?

Open the character's acquisition and ability screens in the live game. Shops, rewards, requirements and progression can change. SWGOH.GG lists recent sources and kit details, but the account's live UI determines eligibility. Do not spend crystals or other limited resources based solely on an old screenshot.
