Six expansions, six major story eras
Official publisher imagery accompanies each guide. Follow the campaign summary, then open the linked dossier for its full story route, companions, game history and lore.
Makeb becomes the center of a struggle for isotope-5, a resource that could change the balance of power. Republic and Imperial players follow distinct campaigns as the planet destabilizes and Toborro's ambitions threaten its population.
Major settings: Makeb
What to play: Play your faction's Makeb story. The Seeker Droid and Macrobinocular quest chains are additional activities, not a substitute for the campaign.
Continue to: Forged Alliances and Shadow of Revan.
Enemies of the Republic and Empire find a common threat
Lana Beniko and Theron Shan investigate a Revanite conspiracy that crosses the Republic–Imperial divide. The main campaign moves from Rishi to Yavin 4, bringing Revan's influence back into the struggle for galactic power.
Major settings: Rishi and Yavin 4
What to play: Begin with Forged Alliances, then play Rishi and Yavin 4. The Temple of Sacrifice Operation is not the only route to the story conclusion.
Continue to: Ziost, then Knights of the Fallen Empire.
Zakuul's rise transforms the conflict, displacing the Republic and Sith Empire as the central powers. The Outlander gathers a new Alliance around Odessen in a cinematic campaign structured into sixteen story chapters.
Major settings: Zakuul and Odessen
What to play: Play Chapters I–XVI in order. Alliance Alerts and Star Fortress activities add content, but the chapter campaign is the central storyline.
Continue to: The nine chapters of Knights of the Eternal Throne.
The Alliance's struggle with Vaylin and Valkorion reaches its decisive stage. Nine chapters continue the cinematic story and resolve the immediate battle for the Eternal Throne, while the later war for Iokath begins a separate follow-up.
Major settings: Zakuul, Iokath and the Eternal Throne
What to play: Finish the nine chapters first. Then follow Iokath, Umbara, Copero, Nathema and Ossus before Onslaught.
Continue to: Jedi Under Siege on Ossus, then Onslaught.
Factional loyalties again shape the story across Onderon, Mek-Sha and Corellia. Onslaught follows the renewed war and the consequences of the Alliance era, with the Objective Meridian Flashpoint forming part of the campaign.
Major settings: Onderon, Mek-Sha and Corellia
What to play: Play the Onderon and Mek-Sha stories, then Objective Meridian. Follow the later 6.x story missions before starting Legacy of the Sith.
Continue to: Echoes of Oblivion, Spirit of Vengeance and Secrets of the Enclave.
The Malgus and Darth Nul story reaches its 2026 finale
The conflict begins around Manaan's kolto supply and Darth Malgus's search for Sith secrets. The story continues through Elom and later Mandalorian and Sith developments, ending with Legacy Reborn at Khar Shian in June 2026.
Major settings: Manaan and Elom
What to play: Start with Manaan and Ruins of Nul, then follow the 7.x story missions through Game Update 7.9, Legacy Reborn.
Continue to: Masters of the Force (8.0), announced and on the Public Test Server as of October 2026.
02 · Continuity between releases
The important stories between expansions
These connecting adventures are easy to miss when browsing only by expansion title. The sequence is a recommended narrative route, not a claim that every activity is required to unlock the next chapter.
Original class story → Makeb
Before the first expansion
Finish one of the eight original class stories. The Ilum storyline and its concluding Flashpoints provide a useful launch-era bridge before the Makeb campaign.
Makeb → Forged Alliances
Before Shadow of Revan
Forged Alliances links the original faction war to the Revanite conspiracy. The storyline includes the assault Flashpoints on Tython and Korriban, Depths of Manaan, and Legacy of the Rakata.
Yavin 4 → Ziost → Zakuul
Before Fallen Empire
After Shadow of Revan, play Ziost for the events that lead into the new Zakuul story. Then begin the sixteen Fallen Empire chapters.
Iokath → Traitor arc → Ossus
Between Eternal Throne and Onslaught
After the nine Eternal Throne chapters, follow the War for Iokath, Crisis on Umbara, A Traitor Among the Chiss, The Nathema Conspiracy and Jedi Under Siege on Ossus.
6.x follow-ups → Manaan
Between Onslaught and Legacy of the Sith
After Objective Meridian, continue Echoes of Oblivion, Spirit of Vengeance and Secrets of the Enclave. The story then leads into Legacy of the Sith on Manaan.
03 · Practical play order
Where should you begin?
Playing SWTOR for the first time
Choose one of the eight Origin Stories and finish its three chapters. Then continue to Ilum and Rise of the Hutt Cartel if you want the story in release order.
Use the in-game Eras Window and your Mission Log to see your next available story mission. Your faction, past choices and completed chapters matter more than an old recommended character level.
The 7.9 finale concluded the Legacy of the Sith era in June 2026. The announced 8.0 era has been previewed on the Public Test Server; it is not part of the six released expansions.
Game Update 8.0 was announced as the next SWTOR era, with the Galaxy in Chaos story, Ryloth, a new Operation and combat updates. The publisher opened Public Test Server testing in 2026. Those test features are not evidence that the new campaign is live.
