A masked captain at the edge of the war
Zorii Bliss leads the Spice Runners of Kijimi during the final confrontation between the First Order and the Resistance. She is introduced to film audiences as an armed underworld figure in a helmet that conceals nearly her entire face. Her significance is not limited to a visually distinctive costume. Zorii controls access to people, places and information that the Resistance urgently needs.
Kijimi is a difficult refuge. A series of criminal networks operate among old mountain monasteries and narrow, snow-covered streets while First Order forces attempt to exert control. Zorii’s profession makes neutrality attractive: her people rely on trade, discretion and the ability to make agreements with clients whose larger politics are not their own.
Yet neutrality becomes difficult when a military occupation threatens those same livelihoods. Zorii’s history with Poe Dameron creates a particularly personal version of that problem. She distrusts a former companion who left the Spice Runners, but he arrives seeking help on behalf of people confronting the occupying power.
This dossier follows the chronology of the novel Poe Dameron: Free Fall, the film The Rise of Skywalker, and Lucasfilm’s Databank accounts. It distinguishes the earlier name Zorii Wynn from her later public identity, and treats her decision to help the Resistance as a negotiated change in political alignment, not evidence she had always secretly belonged to its military.

Before the helmet: Zorii Wynn
The 2020 Canon novel Poe Dameron: Free Fall by Alex Segura expands Zorii’s earlier career. In Lucasfilm’s published excerpt, the character is named Zorii Wynn. She serves aboard a Spice Runner ship called the Ragged Claw at the time a disaffected young Poe Dameron becomes involved with the crew.
Their first encounters show more than a simple attraction between young outlaws. Zorii is already familiar with the practical and political risks of smuggling. She works with companions including Vigilch, Marinda Gan and Gen Tri, who respond to approaching New Republic security personnel as a coordinated, if fractious, group.
Poe can fly the ship and invent a way out of an interdiction, but he is uneasy about harming government pilots. Zorii works within the mission while responding to the need to avoid unnecessary killing. The excerpt places their different priorities in the same moment, establishing the tension that will later define their relationship.
The novel’s later story identifies Zeva Bliss as Zorii’s mother and leader of the Spice Runners during this earlier period. The family connection matters because Zorii’s future inside the organization is inseparable from how she understands her mother’s methods. It is not evidence that every Spice Runner position is inherited or that Zorii automatically held command from childhood.
03 / SPICE RUNNER ARCHIVE
The Ragged Claw and a broken partnership
Poe joins the Spice Runners partly in rebellion against the expectations of his father, Kes Dameron, and the political legacy of his mother, Shara Bey. Zorii belongs to a world Poe initially regards as a route to freedom. For her, it is a set of real relationships, dangers and obligations that cannot simply be abandoned when the adventure loses its appeal.
Free Fall shows the crew confronting New Republic security, rival smugglers and internal uncertainty. Poe brings unconventional flying ability but struggles with the conduct expected of him. Zorii is a capable partner in the immediate work and a defender of the group’s internal rules, even where those rules do not fit Poe’s moral commitments.
Their connection develops alongside disagreements about loyalty. A young recruit can view a smuggling crew as a temporary alternative to home, while an established member may regard it as the only reliable community she has known. Neither interpretation prevents affection, but the difference makes a durable partnership difficult.
The story’s Kijimi summit brings that tension into focus when Zeva uses the appearance of negotiations with other criminal groups to support a violent plan. Poe cannot accept the consequences. Zorii ultimately saves him from her mother’s immediate violence, yet his refusal to join her in taking control of the organization creates a lasting break.
By the time of The Rise of Skywalker, the film does not require every viewer to know the novel, but the earlier story explains why Zorii feels personally betrayed by the man the Resistance now regards as a trusted leader.
04 / SPICE RUNNER ARCHIVE
Leader of the Spice Runners
In the later film, Zorii commands a local Spice Runner network on Kijimi. Lucasfilm’s biography identifies her as its leader, and the group’s presence is visible in the Thieves’ Quarter and the Spice Runners’ Den. The organization is not presented as a department of the First Order or the Resistance.
A smuggling group’s authority works through contacts, informal sanctions, trusted crews and access to goods whose movement may be restricted by governments. Zorii can respond quickly when Poe returns because people in her district communicate about who has arrived. She can also grant outsiders access to Babu Frik, an extraordinary droidsmith, because he has an established relationship with the Spice Runners.
That network is powerful without ruling every district of Kijimi. Other groups have held territory on the planet, including the Ashiga Clan during the earlier Galactic Civil War period. Their separate era should be kept clear. Zorii does not appear in the documented Ashiga succession conflict of Star Wars Outlaws.
Zorii’s leadership carries an economic and social responsibility that complicates any suggestion she can simply abandon the planet at will. A captain’s decisions affect a group whose work and shelter have been organized around local relationships for years.
05 / SPICE RUNNER ARCHIVE
Occupied streets and the price of secrecy
Kijimi City occupies a steep, snowy mountain environment whose older religious buildings have been repurposed by guilds, fugitives and criminals. Lucasfilm describes the city as shaped by multiple organizations that operate while trying to avoid the wrath of First Order occupiers.
For the Spice Runners, remaining inconspicuous is an economic necessity. The First Order can arrest, inspect, confiscate and control movements that local smugglers previously negotiated through personal relationships. A smuggling crew may dislike central government but still find itself dependent on the existence of stable markets and predictable escape routes.
The crew’s reluctance to take sides should therefore be interpreted as a response to risk, not as proof its members lack opinions about the occupation. Zorii later makes a direct choice to help the Resistance, but she does so under conditions of enormous personal and institutional danger.
The material environment reinforces these questions. A passage between buildings may be watched. A den can serve as a social meeting place and an information exchange. A workshop can be more valuable than a command center if it houses the one person capable of bypassing a security restriction that blocks a galactic mission.

Poe Dameron comes home to old enemies
When Poe accompanies Rey, Finn and C-3PO to Kijimi during their search for Exegol, Zorii intercepts him. He has left the Spice Runners and built an identity as a Resistance fighter, while she has remained connected to the organization he rejected. Her initial hostility is therefore a response to personal history as well as to a wanted outsider entering a dangerous district.
Zorii is capable of threatening Poe with her blasters, but the encounter also shows the persistence of old trust. Poe asks for help from Babu Frik rather than a direct military confrontation. Zorii ultimately takes the visitors to the droidsmith whose skill is needed to retrieve information held inside C-3PO’s memory.
That decision matters because she is not merely delivering exposition. She is putting an exceptional technical resource within the reach of people pursued by the First Order. The workshop is a node in a network of trust, and Poe’s connection to Zorii makes it accessible.
The reunion also introduces a tension between old and new loyalties. Poe believes he cannot abandon the Resistance. Zorii has reason to value leaving Kijimi before the occupation becomes more destructive. Both are negotiating futures under conditions they did not entirely choose.

The droidsmith and the Sith dagger
Rey’s group needs to uncover the location of a Sith wayfinder. C-3PO can read the writing on Ochi’s dagger, but his programming forbids revealing the Sith-language translation. He has the required information without permission to disclose it.
Babu Frik’s knowledge of droid reprogramming makes it possible to bypass the restriction. Lucasfilm places his workshop in the Thieves’ Quarter and states that he accepts ordinary customers while reserving special modifications for his Spice Runner patrons. Zorii’s introduction therefore provides a credible route to help that cannot be reduced to a public address.
The intervention comes at a moral cost. Threepio must undergo a memory wipe to release the information, and he agrees after learning the consequences. R2-D2 later helps restore much of what Threepio lost; Babu’s workshop remains the site where the immediate decision and procedure took place.
Zorii is neither the engineer who performs the bypass nor the droid whose memory is at stake. Her role is brokerage: connecting a political mission with a specialist who could otherwise be inaccessible. That may seem less dramatic than a blaster fight, but it is indispensable to the larger chain of events.

The data-medallion and a choice about freedom
As the First Order’s presence threatens Kijimi, Zorii wants to escape the planet. She possesses a First Order captain’s data-medallion, a device whose encrypted verification codes allow the holder to pass certain military identity checks. Lucasfilm has a dedicated Databank entry describing its function.
Zorii offers Poe a way out with her, but he refuses to walk away from the Resistance. Later she gives him the medallion so his friends can board a Star Destroyer and help rescue Chewbacca. The object is not simply a symbol of affection; it provides measurable access to spaces controlled by a much larger organization.
Giving it away also has an opportunity cost. A document that could have helped Zorii leave becomes an instrument of rescue for someone else. That transfer demonstrates trust without erasing what divided them in their earlier years.
The gift should not be misdescribed as making Poe a legitimate First Order officer or granting unrestricted access to every Imperial or First Order facility. The device supports a specific impersonation and movement strategy. Its value depends on the receiving system accepting the encrypted authentication.

A world destroyed, a captain still alive
The Rise of Skywalker establishes that Kijimi is destroyed by a Sith Eternal Star Destroyer on the orders of Palpatine. Its loss is not a consequence the audience can prevent by choosing dialogue or reputation rewards. It is a fixed part of the film.
Zorii nevertheless survives. She later arrives with Babu Frik and participates in the broader civilian fleet that comes to Exegol in support of the Resistance. Her survival is not evidence that Kijimi survived, that everyone in the Spice Runners escaped, or that the planet’s social losses were reversed.
Joining the fleet represents a change in the practical meaning of neutrality. An independent criminal captain can participate in a coalition against an existential threat without first becoming an officer under the Resistance’s formal command structure.
Zorii’s flight also gives the destruction human scale. The world lost households, workshops, public spaces and an extraordinary accumulation of reused architecture. Her life continues, but the place where her organization made its livelihood no longer exists.

Helmet, twin blasters and a credential that opens doors
Zorii’s deep burgundy suit, bronzium-colored helmet and opaque visor create a striking public image. The outfit hides much of her personal identity while making her recognizable as a particular armed professional. This distinction matters: anonymity and reputation can coexist if a costume communicates a role more strongly than a face.
Lucasfilm’s Databank identifies her weapons as twin E-851 blaster pistols kept in reverse-draw holsters. Their weighted grips and pirate-inspired form establish a visual link with older swashbuckling styles, while their operation belongs to the technology of the Star Wars setting.
The captain’s data-medallion occupies a different category of material culture. It has no purpose as a weapon. Its authority derives from encrypted codes interpreted by First Order security systems. Zorii can carry a blaster, yet a portable piece of bureaucratic identity technology is what helps her friends gain access to a guarded military space.
The masked costume also has a real-world design history. Actress Keri Russell described finding the helmet empowering during publicity for the film. That account documents an actor’s experience of costume, not a canonical claim about why Zorii herself chooses to keep her face covered.
The image below is official Lucasfilm art for her twin blasters and is separate from the opening portrait of Zorii.

IDS anthropology: informal authority and portable identity
Zorii is a useful case study in the limits of the difference between lawful and unlawful institutions. The First Order claims public authority but uses coercion and occupation. The Spice Runners operate outside formal legal boundaries but have their own rules, shared reputations and routes for assigning responsibility.
Patronage helps explain the relation between Zorii and Babu Frik. The Spice Runners rely on specialist labor; Babu gains work and privileged relationships. An honorary membership may be neither a job title nor family kinship, but it establishes meaningful social boundaries around special services.
The medallion illustrates the material side of bureaucracy. A military organization relies on documents and encrypted devices to classify people. Zorii can transfer an object that persuades that system to grant access, temporarily separating the perceived identity of a traveler from the traveler’s actual loyalties.
Her relationship with Poe demonstrates that a change of allegiance has social consequences. To Poe, leaving the criminal network is part of building a different future. To Zorii, the same departure can be remembered as abandonment. The film resolves their immediate conflict through practical cooperation, not by rewriting their shared past.
Her masked appearance raises questions of public status and anonymity. The wearer can hide intimate facial expressions yet still be identified by the equipment, setting and organization associated with her. Outsiders may know her reputation without knowing her private life.
Finally, the destruction of Kijimi makes the history of a small criminal network part of the history of displacement. The loss of markets, workshops and local contacts cannot be repaired solely by winning the Battle of Exegol. Zorii’s survival is meaningful precisely because her social world was endangered.
INTERACTIVE 01 / IDENTITY TECHNOLOGY
What does the captain’s medallion actually change?
Explore the two supported uses of Zorii’s encrypted First Order identity device. The third panel is anthropological analysis, not a film choice or an extra outcome.
A possible route away from Kijimi
The medallion can help its bearer pass encrypted First Order checks. Zorii values it as a way off an occupied world, but its use depends on the receiving security system and the circumstances of the journey.
Does the medallion make Poe a real First Order captain?
No. It lets him pass an authentication barrier by presenting an authorized credential. Identity verification is not the same as legitimate membership or allegiance.
INTERACTIVE 02 / SPICE RUNNER NETWORK
Who has a claim on Zorii’s loyalty?
The group she leads, the droidsmith she protects and the former crew member she distrusts all need different forms of cooperation. Select a relationship to examine the social stakes.
Affection does not erase abandonment
Poe’s departure wounded the bond they formed as younger smugglers. Zorii can offer help in the film without pretending the earlier breach of trust never happened.
Is Zorii part of the Ashiga Clan?
No verified source establishes that. The Ashiga are a Melitto hive in an earlier Outlaws-era story; Zorii’s organization is the separate Spice Runners of Kijimi, led by humans during the later period.
