In 15,500 BBY, Galactic Republic scouts exploring near Murkhana encountered the Duinuogwuin, immense sentient beings commonly called Star Dragons. The scouts reacted with fear and retreated toward Coruscant. Hundreds of Duinuogwuin followed. Their arrival at the Republic capital became an attack that devastated parts of the cityscape. What could have escalated into a much larger war ended when Supreme Chancellor Fillorean chose communication over full military mobilization and negotiated with the Duinuogwuin philosopher Borz'Mat'oh. The resulting peace became the foundation for a new institution: the University of Coruscant.
First contact near Murkhana
The encounter occurred near Murkhana in the Outer Rim Territories as Republic exploration began pushing outward again after centuries in which the Alsakan conflicts had slowed expansion.
The scouts did not encounter an ordinary starship or settlement. They encountered enormous living beings capable of moving through space.
The Republic's return to frontier exploration immediately exposed how little its personnel understood about some forms of galactic life.
The Duinuogwuin
The Duinuogwuin were intelligent, spacefaring beings commonly called Star Dragons.
Legends descriptions portray them as roughly fifty meters long, capable of surviving and flying through space, and able to expel devastating atomic fire.
Their physical scale made them easy for frightened observers to classify first as monsters rather than people.
Fear becomes the first diplomatic act
The Republic scouts' first response was not careful communication.
They panicked and fled.
That reaction became politically consequential because the Duinuogwuin interpreted the encounter through their own perspective and followed the scouts across space.
Did the scouts fire first?
Some later accounts of Coruscant's history state that the terrified scouts fired on the Duinuogwuin before retreating.
Other major summaries simply say they fled in fear and were followed.
The disagreement does not change the larger lesson: a first contact collapsed because one side reacted to unfamiliar appearance before establishing whether the other was sentient or hostile.
Hundreds follow the scouts
The scouts' retreat did not end the encounter.
Hundreds of Duinuogwuin followed them all the way to Coruscant.
What began as a frontier misunderstanding therefore moved directly to the political center of the Republic.
The attack on Coruscant
When the Star Dragons reached Coruscant, the confrontation became violent.
Legends histories say hundreds attacked the capital and devastated parts of Galactic City with their atomic fire.
The crisis caused panic on Coruscant and concern throughout the Core Worlds.
A city-world under attack
By 15,500 BBY, Coruscant was already the political heart of the Republic and a densely urbanized center with enormous symbolic importance.
An attack there was not simply a local emergency.
It challenged the Republic's assumption that the capital sat safely at the center of an ordered known galaxy.
Why it is called a contention
The event became known as the Duinuogwuin Contention rather than a conventional war.
It began and ended within the same year and grew from failed first contact rather than a long-standing territorial dispute.
The label fits an intense crisis whose political meaning was larger than its duration.
Supreme Chancellor Fillorean
Fillorean was the Republic's Supreme Chancellor during the crisis.
Later accounts emphasize a decision that defined the event: he resisted demands to mobilize the Republic Navy and instead tried to communicate with the beings attacking the capital.
That choice transformed the crisis from a military problem into a diplomatic one.
Refusing immediate naval escalation
Calling in the Navy would have been understandable while Coruscant was burning.
Fillorean instead treated the possibility of intelligence as strategically important.
His restraint mattered because destroying the attackers might have converted a misunderstanding into a lasting interspecies war.
Recognizing sentience
The turning point came when the Republic recognized that the Duinuogwuin were not beasts or natural phenomena.
They were reasoning beings capable of philosophy, negotiation, and political choice.
The crisis had partly been created by the failure to recognize personhood soon enough.
Borz'Mat'oh
Borz'Mat'oh was a Duinuogwuin philosopher who became the principal negotiator on the Star Dragons' side.
His presence in the surviving record matters because it contradicts the scouts' initial fear-based reading of the species.
A being whose body inspired terror became the intellectual partner through whom peace was achieved.
Negotiating while the capital is under threat
Fillorean and Borz'Mat'oh negotiated a settlement while the memory of the attack was immediate.
The surviving summaries do not preserve a clause-by-clause treaty text.
What they do preserve is the outcome: mutual peace between the Republic and the Duinuogwuin.
Mutual peace
The Duinuogwuin Contention did not end with extermination, conquest, or forced submission.
It ended with mutual peace.
The Republic and the Duinuogwuin subsequently maintained relations, and some Star Dragons would later participate in wider galactic institutions.
The University of Coruscant is founded
After the conflict, Fillorean and Borz'Mat'oh founded the University of Coruscant.
Legends sources describe it as Coruscant's first formal university.
A crisis born from ignorance therefore ended by creating an institution dedicated to knowledge.
Coruscant's first formal university
The university began as a single tower in the Fobosi District.
Over thousands of years it expanded into a much larger institution with multiple buildings and specialized schools.
The original tower survived as part of the campus, housing administrative offices, students, and lecture halls.
Statues of both negotiators
The university commemorated its founders with statues of Fillorean and Borz'Mat'oh fashioned from dark chalcedony.
The paired memorials transformed the first-contact crisis into an institutional origin story.
The campus taught future generations that the university itself had emerged from successful communication across radical difference.
From violence to knowledge
The founding has obvious symbolic power.
The Republic failed to understand an unfamiliar people, suffered catastrophic consequences, then responded to the settlement by building a place devoted to learning.
Whether every later student remembered that history is unknown, but the institution preserved it materially through its founders' statues.
Knowledge as peace infrastructure
A university cannot guarantee peace.
It can, however, create specialists in language, history, biology, diplomacy, law, and culture who make future misunderstandings less likely.
The founding of the University of Coruscant can therefore be read as part of the Republic's long-term infrastructure for managing diversity.
The danger of classification by appearance
The scouts' reaction shows how quickly unfamiliar bodies can be turned into assumptions about intelligence or morality.
Gigantic, reptilian, fire-breathing beings looked threatening.
Appearance became a classification shortcut before communication had established who the Duinuogwuin actually were.
Fear of the unfamiliar
The Contention is often remembered as a first-contact disaster because fear came before interpretation.
This does not require assuming the scouts were uniquely malicious.
It demonstrates how institutions can fail when personnel lack the training or cultural framework to manage encounters outside expected categories.
Star Dragons before the Republic knew them
Legends traditions suggest the Duinuogwuin were an ancient species whose appearances had already entered the myths of other peoples.
Stories often depicted Star Dragons as powerful beings who aided oppressed populations.
Those contradictory legends made their actual historical origins difficult for later scholars to reconstruct.
A peaceful species in a violent first contact
Later Republic accounts characterized the Duinuogwuin as intelligent and generally peaceful.
That makes the attack on Coruscant more revealing, not less.
Peaceful societies can still respond violently when an encounter is interpreted as attack, threat, or betrayal.
The risks of exploration
Republic exploration expanded knowledge, trade, diplomacy, and settlement.
It also placed scouts in situations where one mistaken interpretation could have interstellar consequences.
The Duinuogwuin Contention shows that exploration was never merely geographical.
The frontier was already inhabited
From the Republic's perspective, explorers were moving into the outer frontier of known space.
From the perspective of beings already living there, the same region was not an empty frontier at all.
The difference between “discovery” and “encounter” depends on whose map is being used.
Coruscant-centered history
The event is commonly remembered through its attack on Coruscant because the capital's archives dominate Republic history.
That perspective centers the terror experienced by the capital while preserving much less about how the Duinuogwuin interpreted the initial contact.
The archive therefore records one side of fear more clearly than the other.
The missing Duinuogwuin account
Borz'Mat'oh is named, but no surviving full philosophical account from him explains the crisis in his own words.
We know he negotiated peace and helped found the university.
We do not know how he described the scouts' behavior, the attack on Coruscant, or the treaty to other Duinuogwuin.
Duinuogwuin and the Jedi
The peace eventually opened paths for Duinuogwuin participation in wider galactic life.
Thousands of years later, at least one Star Dragon, Willm Lywin, became a Jedi and established the Teyan Praxeum on Teya IV.
A species once treated as terrifying outsiders thus became part of one of the Republic's most important transplanetary traditions.
The Duinuogwuin survive into current canon
The Duinuogwuin species itself was brought into current canon through The High Republic: The Rising Storm.
The ancient 15,500 BBY Contention, Fillorean, Borz'Mat'oh, and the Legends founding narrative for the University of Coruscant have not been re-established in current canon.
The species therefore crosses continuities even though this specific ancient history does not.
A concurrent Jedi technological milestone
Legends chronology also places an important stage in early lightsaber development around this same period.
By the time of the Duinuogwuin Contention, Jedi experimentation with so-called “frozen blaster” technology had produced portable high-energy blades, though they remained unstable, inefficient, and dependent on external power systems.
The exact development date is not precise enough to place confidently before or after the Contention within 15,500 BBY, so IDS treats it as concurrent technological context rather than a separate precisely ordered event here.
Not the familiar lightsaber yet
These early devices were not the compact, self-contained lightsabers of later Jedi.
They consumed large amounts of energy and could overheat after short use.
Later generations would refine the technology enormously before the weapon became the practical symbol of the Jedi Order.
The Second Alsakan Conflict was still happening
The Duinuogwuin Contention occurred while the Second Alsakan Conflict continued elsewhere.
Coruscant therefore faced an unexpected first-contact crisis while already participating in an eight-century political and military struggle with Alsakan.
Historical eras overlap; one crisis does not wait for another to end.
Only twenty years before the Strontium Raid
Twenty years after the Contention, the Second Alsakan Conflict produced another named military event: the Strontium Raid on Abhean in 15,480 BBY.
The contrast is striking.
Coruscant had just demonstrated that communication could end a catastrophic misunderstanding, yet the Republic's older internal rivalry continued unresolved.
Anthropological assessment
The Duinuogwuin Contention is fundamentally a story about classification. Republic scouts encountered bodies so unfamiliar that fear preceded recognition of personhood. The crisis escalated because appearance was treated as evidence of intent.
Fillorean and Borz'Mat'oh reversed that process by communicating. Their success did more than stop an attack. It reframed the Star Dragons from monsters at the edge of Republic knowledge into political beings with whom institutions could be shared.
The founding of the University of Coruscant makes the episode unusually powerful. A failed encounter created an institution dedicated to producing knowledge. In anthropological terms, the Republic responded to the limits of its categories by building a place where categories themselves could be studied, debated, and revised.
