ALLIANCE FIELD MANUAL / REBEL PHOENIX

Build a Phoenix squad that actually works

Phoenix survives through shared Unique abilities, tempo from Specials, assistance, and timely protection. The squad can feel indestructible when its enabling conditions remain active, yet collapse quickly when it cannot take its first meaningful turns. This guide translates the mechanics into a five-unit battle plan rather than an unverified list of winning counters.

The positions above are instructional labels, not locked deployment slots. Some game modes restrict the number of units you can use, change eligibility or activate Omicrons. Check the actual selected event before copying all five characters.

02 / TEAM MECHANICS

What keeps this squad running

Hera's Rise Together makes active Phoenix allies share their Unique abilities with one another. Her leader also gives Turn Meter after Phoenix Specials when Hera is active. Captain Rex's The Lost Commander adds assisting and recovery patterns, and its Grand Arena clauses require specific team memberships and formats. Hera's own extra Omicron benefits are for Territory Wars, not ordinary Grand Arena. Do not count them when predicting performance in another game mode.

Read all ability conditions before spending.

The character pages linked above explain the individual kits and common mod choices. The fully upgraded text on SWGOH.GG describes effects that may be missing from your own characters until their Zetas, Omicrons or other required upgrades are applied.

03 / SIX-STAGE COMBAT WALKTHROUGH

Decide what to do next, not just which button to press

  1. Before battle: Verify the leader slot, all five faction tags and whether you are entering 5v5, 3v3, Territory Wars or routine PvE. Then check that the enabling Uniques and Omicrons have the required upgrades.
  2. First control decision: If an enemy threatens immediate lockdown, use available disruption or protection before beginning a long offensive sequence. Chopper's buff dispel can help if a dangerous enemy already has removable buffs.
  3. Start your engine: Use Hera's Phoenix support tools and allied Specials to generate a useful sequence; Captain Rex can assist when the conditions on his Unique are met. Decide whether the team needs protection or damage first.
  4. Choose your damage target: If you expect a prolonged encounter, Sabine's Armor Shred should be placed on a durable priority enemy rather than a disposable support. Check that her Demolish Zeta is active before relying on its strongest Stagger and Expose effects.
  5. Preserve a key ally: Kanan can Taunt and provide defensive utility, Chopper can briefly redirect attacks, and Hera can apply Backup Plan. Protect the character whose next action actually matters.
  6. Review: If the opening fails, identify whether the team was controlled before moving, a Special was unavailable, a shared Unique did not qualify, or the selected opponent countered the damage plan. Improve that exact deficiency.

Watch the actual battle log, cooldowns and status effects. A fixed sequence is not a guaranteed counter because opponents can begin with pre-battle buffs, take bonus turns, ignore Taunt or prevent critical debuffs. Record the first trigger that behaved differently than expected before trying again.

INTERACTIVE / PLAYER DECISION DESK

Why is my Phoenix Squadron team losing?

Choose the most visible problem. The response provides a focused diagnostic question and a next action. It does not simulate an account or claim a percentage chance of winning.

Enemy acts first

The concern is surviving or preventing the first enemy control wave. Inspect Speed and any bonus-turn rules, then prioritize Kanan and Chopper protection or Hera's next available support move.

GAME MODE LAB / RULE COMPARISON

Which parts of this squad work in my mode?

Do not confuse a mode-restricted Omicron with an always-on Unique. Choose the mode you are entering to see the correct conditions, what changes from the five-unit example, and where to verify the actual mechanics.

Grand Arena · 5v5

Captain Rex's fully upgraded The Lost Commander Omicron contains a separate all-Phoenix-at-start 5v5 clause. Hera must lead to share Phoenix Uniques; her Territory Wars Omicron is not active here.

Before you attack: Confirm all five Phoenix tags, Rex's actual Omicron tier, ability levels, Datacrons and the complete opposing five before copying a counter.

Version-sensitive mechanic

Chopper’s October 2026 kit update added New Republic-specific interactions. Those conditional effects are not automatically shared with other Phoenix allies; confirm the exact shared-Unique restrictions in his current kit. Check the October Chopper kit adjustment ↗

04 / ROSTER FLEXIBILITY

What changes when a character is missing?

Hera + Captain Rex

A modern teaching core

Hera and Captain Rex demonstrate the central Phoenix leadership and ability interactions. Build around their available upgrade levels.

Kanan or another protector

Survival slot

Use Kanan for protection and cleansing. Chopper's Taunt is brief, so a squad with no durable defender may be vulnerable to focused opening damage.

Sabine, Ezra or Zeb

Offensive flexibility

Sabine provides Armor Shred and Stagger; Ezra and Zeb contribute different offense and control. Select the one that addresses the specific battle problem and event requirements.

Ghost and Phantom II

Fleet value

Some Phoenix investments also improve crewed ships. Verify actual pilot assignments and ability requirements in the ship interface rather than inferring benefits from faction alone.

Roster flexibility is not the same as interchangeability. A team can contain five characters with compatible tags and still lose its intended support or protection if one crucial Unique does not activate. Refer to the linked unit pages and check all named requirements rather than buying or farming the first similarly named character.

05 / UPGRADE AND MOD PRIORITIES

Spend where the team has a real bottleneck

CharacterStat or upgrade focusWhy it matters
HeraSupport Speed and survivalMatch her opening turn with the ally whose next Special is decisive; preserve enough durability for Rise Together and Backup Plan.
Captain RexSpeed and HealthHis value is tied to triggered team support; current squad composition and Omicron activation matter more than one fixed Speed number.
KananHealth and ProtectionSurvive long enough to cleanse and redirect damage. Ability tiers may change how much defense he supplies.
ChopperSpeed + HealthAct at the moment a Taunt or buff dispel prevents collapse; don't rely on random cooldown targeting.
SabineCrit Damage + Crit ChanceBuild enough offense to contribute while retaining useful Speed and Potency. Her Zeta and target choice determine control value.

These recommendations are qualitative starting points, not a current statistical optimization for your private roster. SWGOH.GG's best-mod pages show player behavior, which is useful evidence but not a guarantee. Check the exact skill level and mode before spending a Zeta, Omicron, relic or expensive slice.

MATCHUP INTELLIGENCE / AVOID THE WRONG TARGET

Counter trap: Phoenix attacks into Padmé

Phoenix attacks work partly through assists. Captain Rex can assist when other Phoenix allies use Specials, and Hera's leader ability helps Phoenix allies gain Turn Meter after Specials. Those strengths can work against you when the opposing leader is Padmé Amidala.

WHAT THE OPPONENT GAINS

Protection Up after your assists

With her fully upgraded Always a Choice Unique and Padmé in the leader slot, a Galactic Republic ally gains 40% Protection Up for one turn whenever an enemy attacks it out of turn. This Protection Up cannot be prevented or dispelled. A Phoenix attack that calls repeated assists can help the defense survive instead of breaking through it.

WHAT YOUR TEAM LOSES

Bonus Turn Meter is blocked

Padmé's Unique also stops allies on both teams from gaining or losing bonus Turn Meter. That directly interferes with Phoenix's normal tempo plan. Her Unwavering Courage leadership can turn Protection Up into Courage stacks, giving her Galactic Republic team another reason to benefit from the matchup.

Pre-attack decision: do not select Phoenix just because it has higher relics.

If the opponent has Padmé leading Galactic Republic allies and her relevant abilities are upgraded, consider a different offense with verified matchup evidence. Check the enemy's actual roster, Omicrons and Datacrons. This is a serious mechanical disadvantage, not a claim that every possible Phoenix variant must lose.

5v5 and 3v3 are not interchangeable. Captain Rex's The Lost Commander has a Grand Arena condition for an all-Phoenix squad in 5v5, but its special 3v3 effect requires all allies to be Clone Troopers at battle start. Do not assume Hera-led Phoenix receives the Clone Trooper-specific 3v3 effect.

06 / FAILURE PREVENTION

Do not repeat these mistakes

The squad is ready for the next step when its actual role distribution and critical skills are in place, not when it reaches an arbitrary Galactic Power threshold. If you know which enemy or activity you are preparing for, the farming planner can record the remaining requirements.

07 / FAST REFERENCE

Questions players ask

Should I use this exact five for Grand Arena?

This five-unit example demonstrates mechanics, not a guaranteed best defense or specific counter. Current opposing teams, datacrons and available Omicrons change performance.

Why is Phoenix still useful?

Its shared Uniques and modern Captain Rex options create durable teams, and some members help with fleet progression and Journey goals. Value is account- and mode-dependent.

What is the most important upgrade?

Check whether Hera's Rise Together is fully active and which Captain Rex conditions apply, then upgrade the first missing effect that materially changes your target activity.

Do I need to buy packs for this team?

No purchase is required to follow this guide. Use the game’s current acquisition screen to check available free progression and optional offers. IDS does not treat a purchase as necessary for the squad to function.

GRAND ARENA / OPPOSING STRATEGIES

How Imperial Troopers might attack your Phoenix defense

Historic 5v5 records include Veers/Piett/Dark Trooper/Moff Gideon/Range Trooper against a Hera/Captain Rex/Chopper/Zeb/Kanan team. This is not an automatic counter to all Phoenix formations. Rex's 5v5 Omicron may cleanse Daze/Ability Block and spread Damage Over Time, while Hera's Backup Plan can revive its target.
