SEPARATIST OPERATIONS / GRIEVOUS STRATEGY

Master the General Grievous Droid engine

A Grievous squad is not five unrelated Droids. It relies on B1's unusual battalion stacks, B2's reactive turns and buff removal, MagnaGuard's protective Taunt, and Grievous's Max Health scaling. When it works, the squad keeps pressure on the enemy even as its own allies take damage. When it fails, the cause is often a kit condition—not simply insufficient Galactic Power.

02 / TEAM MECHANICS

What keeps this squad running

Grievous's Daunting Presence weakens enemy defenses and gives allies Turn Meter when a Target Locked opponent takes damage. At the start of his turn, Metalloid Monstrosity damages other Droid allies without defeating them, while increasing Grievous's Max Health and Potency. The fully upgraded Unique also interacts with allied defeats. B1's one Health and Droid Battalion stacks mean that normal tank healing assumptions do not apply. These effects are the squad's core, not accidental side effects.

Read all ability conditions before spending.

The character pages linked above explain the individual kits and common mod choices. The fully upgraded text on SWGOH.GG describes effects that may be missing from your own characters until their Zetas, Omicrons or other required upgrades are applied.

03 / SIX-STAGE COMBAT WALKTHROUGH

Decide what to do next, not just which button to press

  1. Before battle: Check the exact Separatist Droid lineup and whether Grievous is leading. Verify critical Zeta abilities on Grievous, B1, B2 and MagnaGuard rather than copying a maxed-player rotation.
  2. Establish the opening: Identify an opponent whose buff or Taunt prevents targeting. If B2 gets a reactive turn, consider Mow Down to strip enemy effects and attempt Buff Immunity.
  3. Apply Target Lock: Use B1, B2 or MagnaGuard as appropriate to place Target Lock on an opponent that will be hit repeatedly. Grievous's leader and several other Droids interact with that condition.
  4. Protect the engine: Allow MagnaGuard to cover other Separatist Droids while it can still Taunt. Use Disruption when multiple teammates are debuffed; expect the opening Stealth effect when Grievous and the eligible allies are present.
  5. Manage your stacks: Track B1's Droid Battalion rather than its nominal Health. Frequent enemy hits cost stacks; taking a turn can replenish them. Don't attempt to improve the mechanic with ordinary Protection mods.
  6. Use the decisive strike: Grievous's effective damage scales with his own Max Health. Time his strong attacks when B2 has stripped protection and the right targets can be damaged. If an allied Droid or Separatist is defeated, check for the upgraded Unique's bonus-turn reset.

Watch the actual battle log, cooldowns and status effects. A fixed sequence is not a guaranteed counter because opponents can begin with pre-battle buffs, take bonus turns, ignore Taunt or prevent critical debuffs. Record the first trigger that behaved differently than expected before trying again.

INTERACTIVE / PLAYER DECISION DESK

Why is my Separatist Droids team losing?

Choose the most visible problem. The response provides a focused diagnostic question and a next action. It does not simulate an account or claim a percentage chance of winning.

Enemy buffs block everything

Start by reviewing B2's Mow Down, whether it can dispel the relevant buffs, and whether Buff Immunity can land. A character immune to debuffs requires a different plan.

GAME MODE LAB / RULE COMPARISON

Which parts of this squad work in my mode?

Do not confuse a mode-restricted Omicron with an always-on Unique. Choose the mode you are entering to see the correct conditions, what changes from the five-unit example, and where to verify the actual mechanics.

Grand Arena · 5v5

Grievous, B1, B2, MagnaGuard and Droideka illustrate a five-character Droid engine: Target Lock, Turn Meter, assists, Taunt and finishing power. A remembered historical counter is not evidence of present-day results.

Before you attack: Confirm the whole opponent roster, abilities and Datacron. Use Season 84 5v5 records before risking a scarce premium attack.

Version-sensitive mechanic

The Grievous-led squad is an illustrative team, not a universal Journey Guide requirement. The in-game event screen determines whether a named Separatist team or another specified leader is necessary. Check current 5v5 and 3v3 counter records ↗

04 / ROSTER FLEXIBILITY

What changes when a character is missing?

Grievous leader

Max Health offense

The squad gains special Target Lock interactions and relies on Grievous's Unique. Check the actual Zeta tiers before committing.

B1 + B2

Sustain plus control

B1 is a stack-based support that can assist; B2 strips buffs and can gain reactive turns. Together they change how the formation operates.

MagnaGuard

Frontline and cleanse

MagnaGuard can Taunt and remove debuffs across Separatist allies. It protects important Droids while Grievous increases threat.

Droideka

Damage slot

Droideka is a typical classic fifth, but current alternatives exist. A different event may require Asajj or a precise eligible unit; verify the rules in-game.

Roster flexibility is not the same as interchangeability. A team can contain five characters with compatible tags and still lose its intended support or protection if one crucial Unique does not activate. Refer to the linked unit pages and check all named requirements rather than buying or farming the first similarly named character.

05 / UPGRADE AND MOD PRIORITIES

Spend where the team has a real bottleneck

CharacterStat or upgrade focusWhy it matters
General GrievousHigh Max HealthHis kit specifically scales damage with Max Health; do not assume generic Offense is the main statistic.
B1 Battle DroidOffense + PotencyCrit-focused mods offer poor value because B1 cannot critically hit. Focus on useful offensive and utility stats.
B2 Super Battle DroidPotency + survivalCrit Avoidance and Potency can help it stay active and apply key status effects.
IG-100 MagnaGuardHealth and ProtectionPrioritize tank survival and ability timing; critical avoidance can reduce concentrated opening damage.
DroidekaKit-dependent damageIts damage pattern and upgrade tiers need a dedicated evaluation. Don't copy Grievous's Max Health build onto another character.

These recommendations are qualitative starting points, not a current statistical optimization for your private roster. SWGOH.GG's best-mod pages show player behavior, which is useful evidence but not a guarantee. Check the exact skill level and mode before spending a Zeta, Omicron, relic or expensive slice.

06 / FAILURE PREVENTION

Do not repeat these mistakes

The squad is ready for the next step when its actual role distribution and critical skills are in place, not when it reaches an arbitrary Galactic Power threshold. If you know which enemy or activity you are preparing for, the farming planner can record the remaining requirements.

07 / FAST REFERENCE

Questions players ask

Why does Grievous hurt his own team?

That damage is built into his Unique: at his turn start he damages other Droids without directly defeating them and gains stacking stats. It still changes the team's survival conditions.

Does B1 really have one Health?

Yes. Its survivability comes from Droid Battalion stacks, not a regular Health/Protection pool. That is why a generic tank mod build is misleading.

Is this the General Skywalker event team?

Not exactly. The older Clash on Kamino event's final encounter includes Asajj Ventress with B1, B2, MagnaGuard and Droideka. Check the current Journey Guide details rather than substituting Grievous automatically.

Do I need to buy packs for this team?

No purchase is required to follow this guide. Use the game’s current acquisition screen to check available free progression and optional offers. IDS does not treat a purchase as necessary for the squad to function.
