Galactic timeline Historical journeys

Historical journeys

Follow six selected paths through Star Wars history. Each path links six existing timeline dossiers, plus related lore and people. Begin at any event and return to the full galactic timeline when you want a broader view.

Two separate continuities. Canon and Legends histories are labeled separately. Events appear in a useful reading order, not as proof that every story occurred in a precise sequence within the same year. These routes are curated selections, not a complete chronology.

From the ancient Sith to the Rule of One

Conquest, exile, succession and revived Sith authority

Follow six already published Legends records showing how Sith institutions changed across millennia. These are selections, not a claim that the gaps between them were historically continuous.

Read the events in sequence

  1. 01The Rakatan Infinite Empire at its height
  2. 02The Daragons discover the Sith Empire
  3. 03The Great Hyperspace War begins
  4. 04The Sith exodus begins
  5. 05Darth Bane establishes the Rule of Two
  6. 06The Sith–Imperial War begins

Source context: The original Tales of the Jedi: The Golden Age of the Sith and The Fall of the Sith Empire comics describe the Daragon expedition and war. The Old Republic: Revan supplies later Sith-exile context. Lucasfilm's Darth Bane entry describes the Rule of Two. The 127 ABY Legacy-era record comes from the separate Star Wars: Legacy comics. These sources span different periods, not a single uninterrupted Sith state.

Revan, the Mandalorian Wars and the Old Republic

Jedi dissent, war, memory and fractured authority

Move from the Mandalorian campaign through Revan's intervention and the Jedi Civil War to the postwar Sith Triumvirate. The sequence is Legends continuity, not present-day Canon.

Read the events in sequence

  1. 01The Mandalorian Wars begin
  2. 02Revan joins the Mandalorian Wars
  3. 03Revan defeats Mandalore the Ultimate
  4. 04The Jedi Civil War begins
  5. 05The attack on the Endar Spire
  6. 06The Sith Triumvirate forms

Source context: The Old Republic official Galactic History covers the Mandalorian Wars and Jedi Civil War in its Legends narrative. Lucasfilm's Knights of the Old Republic game overview establishes the game's setting. Exact BBY conversions and the Sith Triumvirate's approximate formation depend on the cited game, sourcebooks and individual article records.

From Naboo to Order 66

Republic crisis, militarization and destruction of the Jedi

Trace how a blockade became a political crisis, the Clone Wars transformed the Republic, and the Sith seized state power. The final events cluster in 19 BBY and should not imply a precise sequence within that year beyond the stories.

Read the events in sequence

  1. 01The Trade Federation blockades Naboo
  2. 02Palpatine becomes Supreme Chancellor
  3. 03The First Battle of Geonosis
  4. 04The Siege of Mandalore and Maul's capture
  5. 05Order 66 and the Jedi purge
  6. 06The Galactic Empire is declared

Source context: Lucasfilm's era framework, the Separatist history and The Clone Wars episode “Shattered” establish the Republic-to-Empire sequence, including Maul's capture before Order 66. Same-year dates are not month-level evidence.

Building and enforcing the Galactic Empire

Imperial institutions, conscription, classification and superweapons

Follow the Empire's establishment, early military recruitment, Thrawn's approximate entry into Imperial service and the destruction of Alderaan. Vader recruited Doctor Aphra only after the subsequent Battle of Yavin.

Read the events in sequence

  1. 01The Galactic Empire is declared
  2. 02The Bad Batch resists an Imperial order
  3. 03The Imperial stormtrooper recruitment bill
  4. 04Thrawn joins the Imperial Navy
  5. 05The Death Star destroys Alderaan
  6. 06Vader recruits Doctor Aphra

Source context: Lucasfilm's Bad Batch history and Imperial Defense Recruitment Bill explain the early military transition. Doctor Aphra's official history places her recruitment after Yavin. The precise year of Thrawn's entry remains approximate; Alderaan's placement immediately before Yavin is secure.

The Rebellion, from Aldhani to Endor

Resistance networks, state violence, intelligence and coalition warfare

Follow Aldhani's consequences, Mon Mothma's public break, the Alliance's formation, Scarif, Yavin and Endor. Scarif directly precedes Yavin; the archive uses an explicitly labeled pre-Yavin dating convention.

Read the events in sequence

  1. 01The Aldhani heist
  2. 02Mon Mothma denounces the Empire
  3. 03The Rebel Alliance is publicly formed
  4. 04The Death Star plans are transmitted from Scarif
  5. 05The Battle of Yavin
  6. 06The Battle of Endor

Source context: Mon Mothma's Lucasfilm biography documents her Ghorman denunciation and the Rebel Alliance's public formation. Lucasfilm's Death Star Plans entry confirms the Scarif transmission. The official viewing order places Rogue One immediately before A New Hope, and Return of the Jedi later. The archive's 1 BBY label is a stated convention, not a separate event between Scarif and Yavin.

From Endor to the fractured New Republic

Military collapse, reconstruction, Imperial survivors and Mandalorian sovereignty

Begin at Endor, follow the Emperor's contingency and Kashyyyk's liberation before Jakku, then compare Mandalore's restoration with Thrawn's later return. The final events share an approximate New Republic setting rather than a precisely dated month.

Read the events in sequence

  1. 01The Battle of Endor
  2. 02Operation: Cinder targets Imperial worlds
  3. 03Han and Chewbacca liberate Kashyyyk
  4. 04The Battle of Jakku
  5. 05Mandalore is reclaimed
  6. 06Thrawn returns from Peridea

Source context: Lucasfilm's Contingency history puts Operation Cinder after Endor and Jakku approximately a year afterward. An official Empire's End excerpt describes Kashyyyk's earlier liberation. The official series viewing guide places The Mandalorian before Ahsoka; exact intra-year dates remain approximate.
